Even Keel Fish Shack recently opened in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, offering amazing deals on local seafood — as well as a fad way to drink sparkling wine.
At newly opened Even Keel Fish Shack, Monday and Tuesday just got a little — no, wait, a lot — better.
Located on the southeast corner of A-1-A and Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the local seafood restaurant offers two amazing deals every week (and a fan way to drink sparkling wine).
It starts with Monday Mussel Madness special, all-you-can-eat spicy mussels for $19 per person. It's quickly followed up by their $2 Tuesday, where you can get $2 oysters, $2 Miller High Life, and $2 Chambongs from open to close.
What's a chambong, you ask? Basically, it's a funky drinking vessel made specifically for the rapid and enhanced consumption of sparkling wine or champagne. Think elevated beer bong, allowing you to chug your bubbly in style. That should be enough to make you #stayevenkeel through the early part of the work week.
At Even Keel, chef/owners Dave MacLennan and Brad Phillips do more than offer up a good time. Their take on a laid-back neighborhood raw bar and seafood restaurant is the culmination of nearly 20 years as a creative and culinary partnership.
The duo say they originally opened in Fort Lauderdale in January 2019. When the pandemic forced them to close the doors, MacLennan and Philips took the downtime to re-envision the concept and downsize.
Today, the 1,500-square-foot space offers more of a beach vibe and a smaller menu that focuses on their greatest hits — dishes that offer a modern approach to coastal Floridian cuisine and classic American comfort food.
"Our kitchen is a culinary workshop anchored by an appreciation for what's currently running — local, seasonal, and sustainable," the chef/owner duo say. "The restaurant supports a network of outstanding local purveyors and artisans who share a commitment to celebrating and respecting the bounty of our surrounding land and sea."
Favorite dishes include the house fish dip, prepared with fish that varies by season — think fatty catches like mahi-mahi, king fish or swordfish. Mixed with a house-made lemon aioli, chopped celery and onion, and a touch of chili powder, it makes for a light and refreshing take on an often mayo-heavy appetizer.
Similarly, the warm New England-style Lobster Roll allows fresh ingredients to shine. A toasted split-top bun is stuffed with fresh cold water lobster flavored with a ginger- and Fresno chili pepper-spiked butter, then topped with chopped chives and dab of lemon aioli. Another popular menu item, the Adult Crab Grilled Cheese, is equally creative: lump blue crab, melted brie, truffle oil, and a sweet seasonal spread is fitted between two thick slices of dense, fluffy brioche bread.
The restaurant’s seasonally-driven beverage program is equally creative. Cocktails, made in collaboration with BootlegGreg Cocktail Co., vary from the classic mule and margarita, to flavorful concoctions available on tap including a heady rum punch, carbonated gin cocktail, and rotating seasonal mojito. There's even a housemade frosé made with Glendalough pink gin, rosé wine, apple, and lemon juice.
The restaurant is open to walk-in guests on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations) seven days a week. A happy hours is offered Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. with $5 roasted oysters, $6 frose, and $6 margaritas/mules, $6 sangria, $5 wine, and $4 craft beer on tap.
